what is a .hbc2 file?

A HyperBac compressed file archive can be created using the HyperBac software, which was developed by Xceleon Technologies to provide users with integrated database archiving and compression functionalities. A HyperBac compressed file archive may contain a database file or a group of files selected by the HyperBac user for compression and encoding in one HBC2 file. A folder or group of folders containing uncompressed database files may also be stored and compressed as an HBC2 file. These HyperBac compressed file archives have 90% smaller sizes than the combined file size of the uncompressed database files stored in an HBC2 file. Supported database systems by the HBC format include Microsoft SQL Server, SharePoint, Oracle, Sybase and MySQL among other widely used database management systems. The Red Gate SQL HyperBac software is a file decompression and compression tool mainly developed for archiving database files into smaller HBC2 files. An HBC2 file can be decompressed with the Red Gate SQL HyperBac software.

Red Gate SQL HyperBac

Red Gate SQL HyperBac

Red Gate SQL HyperBac. Developed by Red Gate Software Ltd., is a compression and encryption tool for SQL Server backups. It can compress files up to 95% and provides users with an option to backup to other file formats like .zip. This program runs as a Windows Service and intercepts read and write requests whenever a user creates a backup or runs a restore. Because the application executes file compression and encryption externally, there is no need to modify or configure the SQL Sever. SQL Hyperbac works directly with standard T-SQL BACKUP and RESTORE, so no special syntax is needed and likewise, there is no need to alter back-up routines. It uses its own dictionary-based lossless compression algorithm and utilizes the compression storage formats SHRINK, SHRINKFAST (proprietary format), and DEFFLATE. HyperBac uses a 256-bit AES encryption to secure files and to prevent unauthorized access to confidential data.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .hbc2 files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .hbc2. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
