what is a .mbox file?

The MBOX file extension was developed for an E-mail Mailbox File that is used in organizing messages sent and received as emails. Normally considered as a generic term, electronic messages are stored and consolidated in a single file as plain text. MBOX is a file format that represents encoded information intended for storage in a computer file. It shows how bits are used as medium for digital storage and maybe free or proprietary. There are file formats that are used for special types of data like PNG which stores bitmapped images using data compression algorithms called LOSSLESS data compression. These images are reconstructed compressed data copied exactly from the original data. There are also other formats that use another form of compression called LOSSY compression. This type compresses images by eliminating unnecessary information called bits, thereby allowing the file to be smaller in size. Examples of these are TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics), GZIP (Unix Tool) and ZIP file formats. Similar compression technology is implemented into the consolidation of multiple email messages into MBOX files.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mbox files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mbox. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
