what is a .dvdproj file?

An iDVD project file is classified as a data file used by the Apple iDVD software, and these data files are saved in the DVDPROJ format. Affixed with the .dvdproj extension, these DVDPROJ files usually consist of details associated to the DVD movies and other multimedia content stored in an iDVD project. The data saved by authors of a DVDPROJ file using the Apple iDVD software includes chapters of DVD movies and reference data for other multimedia content, digital objects, audio clips and sound effects stored in corresponding DVDPROJ files. Apple developed this software to provide users of Mac platforms with a set of features for creating and burning DVD disks, and Apple also developed the DVDPROJ file format to serve as a template file for a DVD project created by an Apple iDVD user. DVD disks created using the Apple iDVD application are supported by many standard standalone DVD players and PC or Mac DVD-ROM/RW drives. Data stored in a DVDPROJ file may be imported to a new Apple iDVD project.

Apple iDVD

Apple iDVD is a DVD creator software for OS X computers. It allows a user to burn digital images, audios in MP3 and movies using QuickTime to DVDs which can be played on any DVD player. This Apple product is also compatible for Windows DVD Maker. The use of third party optical drives for burning is acceptable with this program. DVD menu systems are also created with hundreds of themes to select from, all for the menus and submenus of DVDs, with drop zones on each theme. Even image slideshows from iPhoto and video projects through iMovie can be optionally exported straight to this program. In fact, the Media panel included lets a user access data from the iPhoto library, iTunes library and Movies folder. There is also a map view, a One Step DVD tool, and an option to show or hide the approximation of the TV Safe Area.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .dvdproj files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .dvdproj. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
