what is a .hpi file?

Hemera Technologies developed these Hemera photo objects image files as raster images, and these are encoded and integrated with image compression specifications proprietary to Hemera. Photo Clip Art and BizArt are some of the applications implemented with support for these HPI files. The HPI format is mainly used for the distribution of digital stock photos and royalty-free images. The content of an HPI file may include an image header. Some applications that can be used to open and view the content of these HPI files include the XnView software. These applications reference the data stored in an HPI file, and the program displays the image along with some functionalities upon user request. Digital images and color quality configurations among other design elements are stored in these HPI files. The HPI Converter program can be used to export these HPI files to more widely used raster image formats. Digital photo editing applications with support for these HPI raster image files can be used to open and edit the content stored in these HPI files.

HPI Converter

HPI Converter

HPI Converter is a conversion utility for HPI files to be formatted into PNG files with alpha transparency. This software also works from Hemera Browser. You will drop one or more files from your browser and save the PNG files anywhere you choose. To help you ensure that you have chosen the right files to convert, HPI converter also shows a preview of the pictures. HPI files are associated with Hemera Photo Objects [images]. The HPI file contains a fixed 32-byte header resembling the header used in PNG [Portable Network Graphics] file. The color image data is presented in JPEG format following this header. If you follow the main image, the grayscale mask data is presented as PNG format. This will achieve good compression of the image data and excellent compression for the grayscale mask data that is dominated usually by pure black and pure white pixels.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .hpi files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .hpi. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
