LMX files were developed and used by Nokia as Landmark Exchange Files or data files containing descriptions of landmarks that are mostly used in Nokia mobile phones as well as in GPS navigation software. The descriptive data contained in LMX files are the name, the coordinates, the category, the description, and the address and these data can be shown on map. LMX files are usually saved n the XML format. Since Nokia phones usually have mapping applications that allows users to track destinations, etc. they make use of LMX files by importing these files using the mapping application the phone contains. Nokia Symbian-based devices like S60 mobile phones support LMX files. LMX files can be opened in both Windows and MAC OS using software like the Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Multimedia Transfer programs. Nokia PC Suite is a useful program for transferring content from phone to computer and vice versa. Nokia Suite

Nokia Suite

Nokia Suite, formerly Nokia Ovi Suite, is an application for Nokia users to hook up their devices with Microsoft Windows. It can synchronize contacts, calendar, messages, photos, videos and music between a Nokia device and a PC. Mobile devices utilize the Symbian OS for installations and the installer archives used by Symbian are known as SIS files. Well known mobile devices utilize Symbian OS, meaning SIS files are important in almost all mobile devices especially when it comes to installing applications. It requires "makesis" command line tool in generating SIS files and this tool comes with the CreateSIS program. SIS files can be opened by moving them to the suitable mobile device or the device using the Symbian OS but most of the time, SIS files are helpful for setting up themes in an S60 phone. After SIS files are moved, they can be viewed on the mobile device. Mobile phone programs such as the Nokia Suite can open SIS files. This is an application that enables the transfer of data on the computer such as photos, music and videos to the mobile phone and vice versa.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .lmx files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .lmx. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
