The Synthetic Music Mobile Application File (SMAF) is stored in the MMF format and is affixed with MMF extension and is used by Yamaha. These MMF files are generally classified as audio file that contain synthetic music and sound used in cell phone ring tones and personal digital assistant consolidated with graphics and text display. In more technical terms, these files possess three types of instruments parameters namely FM (using FM-synth), PCM (using wavetable synth) and Stream PCM (longer audio clips). Because of such parameters users can create custom instruments with the same sound as the devices. These files are smaller in size compared to standard MIDI format files like SMF even though they resemble MIDI. WAV files and MID files can be converted to MMF format sharing and distributing audio content. These files can be received via email attachments to Phone or PC, downloaded from the Web or retrieved from a PC.

Yamaha MidRadio Player

Yamaha MidRadio Player

The Yamaha MidRadio Player is synthetic music software capable of playing standard MIDI (MID), Wave (WAV), and MP3 files as well as compressed audio streams in SoundVQ (VQF) and SMAF (MMF) formats. The last two mentioned are proprietary music formats developed and distributed by Yamaha Corporation. Older versions of the player work with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP while version 7.x or higher has been updated for installation in Windows 7 and Vista. These two versions are available as freeware at a Yamaha-owned Japanese site. The software has default add-ins for displaying text or chords as the music plays. These are needed when the player connects to PasoKara Hodai, a Yamaha-owned membership site that streams karaoke songs on demand. After each song ends, the player displays a small group of animated characters cheering or booing based on the singer's score flashing above their heads.
Yamaha Mobile Contents Player

Yamaha Mobile Contents Player

The Yamaha Mobile Contents Player (MCP-MA7) is a Windows-only desktop application that supports playback of audio and graphics files. It plays ringtones, synthetic sound clips, and electronic music in SMAF (MMF), Melody For i-mode (MLD), and standard MIDI (MID) formats. SMAF stands for Synthetic-music Mobile Application Format, which Yamaha optimized for use in mobile contents. Kyoto-based Faith Inc. developed Melody for i-mode or MFi as the standard audio file format for ringtones in i-mode phones. NTT DoCoMo's i-mode is a widely implemented mobile Internet service in Japan that spawned a thriving market for websites that offer compatible applications and ringtones. Through Yamaha Mobile Contents Player, users can listen to music and audio clips in different sound formats without using a converter. Besides audio, the MCP-MA7 player also runs photo mixers in M3F or MQF format and displays text or images in time with the music like with karaoke songs.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mmf files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mmf. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
