what is a .save file?

Files with the .save extension are temporary files containing data associated with text documents created using the Unix Nano text editing application. These SAVE files are created when this text editing application has limited memory resources at its disposal. These .sae files will also be generated when the program issues a SIGTERM or SIGHUP notification. When these temporary files are created by the Unix Nano application, they are stored in the directory where the text document is also found. The filename of the text document is used as the filename of the newly created temporary file, followed of course by the .save extension. In case the text document being created by the user with the Unix Nano text editing program has yet to be saved, then these SAVE files are still created and given the default filename Nano.with the .save extension. The GNU Nano, a program for Linux OS-based systems, can view and open these SAVE files.

GNU Nano

GNU Nano

GNU nano was developed by Chris Allegretta and was released in 1999 as unrestricted software. It is a text editor which was specifically developed for computing and operating systems which are Unix-like. This software was developed with the goal of creating something that works like Pico but is free. It works by means of command line interface. It contains different features such as redoing and undoing of edit changes that were made by the user, smooth scrolling, coloured text, and multiple buffers among the others. This software is keyboard-oriented which means that it works with the use of the computer keyboard and is designed to work with different control keys. Most of GNU nano’s features which can be designated using the command line have the capability of being animatedly toggled. GNU nano also has the capability of using pointing devices like a computer mouse in order to use some of its functions that can be found on its shortcut bar.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .save files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .save. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
