.XTG File Extension

Developer: Ben Stöver
File type: Extensible TreeGraph File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .XTG. Files with the file extension .XTG can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .XTG files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .XTG file?

Files with the .xtg extension are called Extensible TreeGraph Files developed by Ben Stöver. These files are created using the TreeGraph 2 software. This software is a program for building and annotating phylogenetic trees which means that users can freely apply numerous graphical formats to their trees. Now the .xt files created by the software are the phylogenetic tree itself that is saved in the XML-based Extensible TreeGraph format. All the data contained in that tree such as the annotations and other information is called .xtg files. .xtg files contribute a lot when it comes to the storage of structured bioinformatics data and since they refer to the phylogenetic trees crested by Treegraph, these flies also help a lot in studying genetic relationships between species. QuarkXpress is also an application that uses the .xtg extension. It is another design application mainly used for creating designs, publishing it, etc. Two common applications that can open these files are TreeGraph and QuarkXpress.

how to open a .XTG file?

Launch a .XTG file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .XTG file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .XTG files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .XTG file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .XTG file will open the correct application. TreeGraph

TreeGraph

TreeGraph is a graphical editor for phylogenetic trees created by Ben Stöver and Kai Müller. This software enables users to apply graphical formats to the elements of a tree, supporting visible and invisible annotations such as support values for every tree branch or node. The source of these annotations are text files containing data in a table, for example exported from a spreadsheet program, or taken from Nexus tree files. Treegraph can read trees (file extension .xtg) in phyloXML, Nexus format (including additional annotations in comments specified by TreeAnnotator of BEAST) or Newick format. XTG is an XML format that can be used by developers of other applications should they need the information that the file contains. Newick files are text files made up of one or more tree descriptions in the Newick notation and contain no further syntax elements or other information while nexus format can contain trees in the Newick notation. TreeGraph 2 is licensed under GNU General Public License.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .XTG files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .XTG. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
