Apple's MacOSaiX is a free desktop application that generates mosaic art using photos found on the Web or from a folder in the computer. The software connects to Flickr, iTunes, Delicious, and Google Image Search to find pictures, artwork, and illustrations that match the shade or color of the tiles. MacOSaiX also extracts screen captures from QuickTime movies and random images created from Glyphs or fonts in the computer. A high-resolution mosaic is produced when the application increases the number of tiles per inch to recreate the master image. The program follows a search- and-compare process that loops around until it finds the right images to use. Assembly of the mosaic is easy once an image archive is created for it.
