what is a .mpz file?

The MPZ file extension is a data file format known as the Miradi Project File. The MPZ file extension and Miradi Project were created by Benetech. Specifically it is a file format used for Miradi Project Zip (.mpz) file of the Miradi project. It contains data used for environmental planning purposes, such as environmental targets and goals. Data is typically entered into an .mpz file using Miradi's Step-by-Step Interview feature. The Miradi Project helps teams to prioritize threats, develop objectives and actions, and select monitoring indicators to assess the effectiveness of their strategies. It is saved in compressed format to maximize disk space. Miradi is written in the Java programming language, so it should run on any operating system that supports Java applications. Files with the MPZ format can be opened with Benetech Miradi in Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux platforms. Users can export Miradi project data to donor reports or, in the future, to a central database to share their information with other practitioners.

Benetech Miradi for Mac

Miradi software's programming language is Java. It is compatible with any operating system as long as it has Java installed in it. For Mac users, the current version of Mac OS X automatically includes Java in its system, so users running this type of operating system need not worry. Some commands in the application are accessible by the right-click button of the mouse, so for Mac users who uses a mouse that only has one button, could either press and hold down the for a few seconds or press the key then click the mouse button. There were errors reported by Mac users, one is the Error (null) that users encounter when they start using Miradi, this usually means that the third-party library was not correctly installed. For correct instructions on proper installation, users are referred to the ReadMe document on the files download page of the Website. Another error that Mac users encounter is the Segmentation Error. This happens when there is a specific sequence of events as the software draw certain diagrams on the screen. Miradi developers claim that this is due to a bug inside the Mac version of Java, users are advised to contact Miradi support for assistance with this problem.

Benetech Miradi is an adaptive management software that is a joint venture of Conservation Measures Partnership (CMP) and Benetech. It provides the tools needed by the project teams to manage, monitor, design and even learn from their conservation projects. It features a step-by-step interview mode that presents users with a series of wizards that will guide them through a structured process. This process creates project management, monitoring and implementation plans that are based on CMP Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation. But experiences users can skip this process and go directly to diagrams, or other view on the bottom of the page. After the series of questions, users are presented with a Conceptual Diagram which is also called a conceptual model, shows a visual overview, in a flowchart format, of the project's situation. It also shows specific conservation targets linked to direct threats and strategies to counter threats. This software will guide users in determining direct threats through a process of rating them. Users will have to answer questions on topics pertaining to the scope and severity of threat and the software will use scoring algorithms for ranking in order to know which one requires priority. It also features Viability Analysis that assesses conservation targets and determines how to measure their health, this will help users in knowing which of their targets need attention immediately. Users can develop the specific goals and objectives of their projects in the Strategic Planning View, which helps in identifying and prioritizing monitoring indicators that measures the conservation targets' status and the effectiveness of their strategies. The Work Plan and Budget Views converts the user's strategic and monitoring plans into a series of tasks that will be assigned to various project team members. Miradi is still being developed to have more features for its users. The developers have presented their plans on their Web site to show their customers what they envision Miradi will be in the future.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mpz files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mpz. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
