These files contribute a lot to full system installation since they contain the setup files and libraries. When these PBI files are opened, they automatically start the PC-BSD installation wizard. They are equal to the Windows installation files and since they are considered executable files, they play a big part in installing software easily and quickly on PC-BSD. PC-BSD was developed by iXsystems and it is known to be a user-friendly operating system. It became popular because it has a stable and secure server environment and the FreeBSD this OS has been based on is excellent when it comes to providing a base for building a desktop operating system. It is called user-friendly because it allows users to easily install the system with a graphical installation program. This excellent function of PC-BSD is also owing to the PBI files it contains.

PC-BSD Installer

PC-BSD Installer

PC-BSD Installer is the installation program for PC-BSD (PCBSD) that is a Unix-like, desktop-oriented operating system built upon the latest releases of FreeBSD. The Installer can be installed through a click-and-point program that guides the user from the desktop environment selection to the basic and advanced disk set-up procedures. In the basic and advanced disk set-up, the user is instructed to select the disk or partition to be installed. There are four desktop environments to choose from – KDE (K Desktop Environment), GNOME, LXDE and Xfce. After installation of the Installer, PC-BSD can be installed and may be used immediately if KDE SC is provided as the pre-installed graphical user interface. The KDE is a full-featured desktop environment that includes support for multiple desktops, 3D desktop effects, and a variety of built-in tools and utilities for both new and power-desktop users. PC-BSD supports ZFS, and the installer offers disk encryption with geli so the system will require a passphrase before booting.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .pbi files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .pbi. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
