what is a .txd file?

A game texture dictionary file can be opened using the TXD Viewer software, an application developed for the PlayStation 2 gaming console, and there are many other programs developed for Microsoft Windows-based systems that can also be used to open and view the content of these game texture dictionary files. Digital bitmap images are archived and stored in a game texture dictionary file, and these small bitmap images are used as texture data implemented into many digital video gaming applications. These digital video game programs that use these game texture dictionary files as reference items are programs implemented with support for the Renderware 3D engine. These bitmap images stored in a game texture dictionary file may be processed with texture-mapping functionalities which can in turn change the visual appearance and textures of the images. The Tony Hawk's American Wasteland video game and the GTA (Grand Theft Auto) application are examples of digital video games that are implemented with support for the Renderware 3D engine as well as support for using the bitmap image content stored in these game texture dictionary files. The TXD file format is used to save these game texture dictionary files, and these files are also affixed with the .txd extension.

VC TXD Viewer

VC TXD Viewer

VC TXD Viewer is a desktop tool that can be used to view DXTn-compressed textures of GTA Vice City on its PC version. Users can use this program for batch extraction. Extracted images can be in various file formats including BMP, JPEG, and TGA format. This program can open TXD files in game models as well as TXD folders. It is both an exporter and a viewer but cannot import files. It offers mass extraction, alpha brightening and file type association. The viewer supports Mipmap support for better viewing. The VC TXD Viewer 1.2 fixes fake alpha issues of its prior version. Similar software like the VC TXD viewer can also read GTA3, SA, VC, IMG and TXD formats. Since this is a graphical viewer it is best to use it with a good video/ graphic card and high display resolution for optimum viewing.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .txd files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .txd. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
